Not a PSA for once, but it's an ad that's still creepy and definitely worth watching. This classic British advert from the 70s starts out as though it's some sort of public information film. We've got creepy music coupled with dark visuals of deep-sea divers scouring the depths of a river (the Thames river to be precise – and even thinking about what lurks beneath those grotty waters is scary) looking for salvage. As the sinister music grows darker and the foreboding chants of the choir get louder and louder, we see boats hoisting something large out from beneath the water that the divers have found. We then cut to hundreds of people queueing outside The British Museum in London, all of them desperate to see the new unearthed exhibition on display. Turns out, it's some sort of massive pack of Benson & Hedges cigarettes that looks like it's been carved out of solid gold! (Which obviously makes sense as B&H cigarette packs are golden.) Who'd have thought it, aye? And to top it all off, we get an actual warning that smoking is dangerous and that no doctors would even dare to put a cigarette anywhere near their mouth! So perhaps it was an anti-smoking PIF in disguise all along? (I'm kidding of course – it was compulsory, back when advertising cigarettes was still allowed, to attach a disclaimer to discourage people from smoking.) Poor smokers didn't seem to catch a break with this one – in between seeing anti-smoking ads on TV, they got pro-smoking ads that looked like anti-smoking ads! Though I'm sad that it would have worked way better as an anti-smoking PIF, it's still a brilliantly sinister advert that'll always be one of my favourites. Directed by Hugh Hudson at Collett Dickenson Pearce, with music by the London Symphony Orchestra, apparently.
