Interrogating the Margins : Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar, Manoranjan Byapari & Arunava Sinha Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar is the author of My Father’s Garden, shortlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature 2019, The Mysterious Ailment of Rupi Baskey, The Adivasi Will Not Dance, Jwala Kumar and the Gift of Fire: Adventures in Champakbagh, Who’s There? and Sumi Budhi and Sugi. Manoranjan Byapari was born in a Dalit family during Partition. His struggle with extreme poverty began at an early age . He learnt how to read and write while in jail at the age of 24. He has written nine novels and numerous short stories . He received the Bangla Academy Prize in 2014 for his autobiography, ltibritte Chandal Jibon. Arunava Sinha translates classic, modern and contemporary Bengali fiction and non-fiction from Bangladesh and India into English. Over 50 of his translations have been published so far. His recent and forthcoming translations include Kunal Basu's The Endgame, Bani Basu's Moom, Taslima Nasrin's Shameless, Akhtaruzzman Elias's Khwabnama and Desire for Fire: Modern Bengali Poetry in Translation. Interrogating the Margins Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar, the Sahitya Akademi award-winning author of The Mysterious Ailment of Rupi Baskey and The Adivasi Will Not Dance , writes with powerful urgency from the margins and against the grain. Bangla writer Manoranjan Byapari was born in Bangladesh and migrated with his family to India as a child. As a rickshaw puller, a chance encounter with the writer Mahasweta Devi changed his life. His autobiography ltibritte Chandal Jiban has been translated into English as Interrogating My Life. In conversation with noted translator and critic Arunava Sinha , they critique the politics of language and literary establishments to search the true rhythm of writing contemporary India. Coetzee, Muhammad Yunus and Orhan Pamuk, Man Booker Prize winners Ben Okri, Howard Jacobson, Margaret Atwood, Marlon James, Michael Ondaatje, Paul Beatty and Yan Martel, Pulitzer Prize winners Andrew Sean Greer, Benjamin Moser, Colson Whitehead and Jhumpa Lahiri, Sahitya Akademi winners Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, M.T. Vasudevan Nair as well as the late Girish Karnad, Mahasweta Devi and U.R. Ananthamurthy along with literary luminaries including Amish Tripathi, Chima¬manda Ngozi Adichie, Vikram Chandra and Vikram Seth. An annual event that goes beyond literature, the Festival has also hosted Amartya Sen, Amitabh Bachchan, the late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Fry, Thomas Piketty and former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai.
