In this video, we look at a Yamaha 40v 2 stroke outboard engine, which is only running on 2 out of the 3 cylinders. We have already diagnosed the reason for the miss fire, that being the lower of the 3 carburettors. We found this by disconnecting each HT lead in turn. The cylinders that were working correctly changed the engine tone / rpm when removed. When it came to the lower cylinder, no change happened. To confirm it's the carb and not ignition, a small amount of carb cleaner is sprayed into the carb throat of the suspected cylinder. The engine responded immediately, indicating a problem with fuel delivery and not ignition. It's now time to find out why it's not working. We remove, disassemble, fault find, rebuild and re fit. After some fault-finding it was discovered that the float needle had become stuck and seized closed, not allowing any fuel to enter the carb. This part was so stuck it had to be replaced.
