Museu Nacional dos Coches Lisbon Portugal National Coach Museum Walking Tour The National Coach Museum has the most important collection, worldwide, of coaches and royal carriages from the 16th to the 19th century. The museum was created in 1905, in the former riding arena of the Royal Palace of Belém, in Lisbon and today consists of two buildings: the former arena of the Palácio de Belém (Praça Afonso de Albuquerque) and the new building opposite (Av. of India), opened in 2015. The museum has a unique collection in the world, of around 9,000 objects, which predominantly includes gala or state vehicles, some for travel and pleasure, from the 16th to 19th centuries, and cavalry accessories. It has been the most visited national museum in Portugal, with 382,593 visitors in 2016. The new building, which houses most of the collections, is a project by Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Pritzker Prize 2006) in consortium with the Ricardo Bak Gordon studio and Engineer Rui Furtado.
