I bypassed my factory WS6 power steering cooler to prevent a future major problem. Now that 4th gen f-bodies are getting pretty old there is a factory design flaw that has started to show its head. The upper radiator hose on 1998-2002 WS6 cars and 2001-2002 regular Trans Ams has a power steering cooler in the upper radiator hose. What is happening now with age/mileage is it’s corroding internally and eventually fails which mixes power steering fluid into the coolant and vice versa. This mixing causes a nasty brown sludge in the entire cooling system that will have to be completely flushed out. The power steering system will also have to be flushed out. I wanted to get in front of this problem and get rid of the power steering cooler before this happens. The job is fairly easy and only takes about an hour. I did it in 90 minutes and that was with filming. All the parts I used cost under $100 but it can be done much cheaper. Honestly if I didn’t already buy my parts before I did the driving test in the video, I would have just spliced the hoses going to the cooler to bypass it and that would be it. So basically $16 for the upper radiator hose and $5 for a splice and some hose clamps….done. I did my driving testing in the winter with the temp 40 degrees outside Results: 2001 WS6 Factory Cooler – 140 degrees 1999 Trans Am no cooler – 120 degrees 2001 WS6 with aftermarket cooler – 100 degrees I’ll be repeating this same test in the summer on a hot day. If the aftermarket cooler is the same temp as no cooler at all I’ll remove the cooler and just spice the hoses together. Watch for a future video around June 2020. Here is a list of what I used: Perma-cool 18” cooler for $50 ( I mistakenly say Derail in the video) https://www.summitracing.com/parts/pr...
