In this lesson from Guitar Tricks, you’ll learn how the Circle of Fifths helps you understand key signatures, chord progressions, and modulations between keys. Each key on the circle moves up by an interval of a fifth, showing how many sharps or flats are in that key—starting with C major (no sharps or flats), then G major (one sharp), D major (two sharps), and so on. For guitar players, this is especially useful for learning guitar scales and understanding relative major and minor keys. For example, C major and A minor share the same notes but center around different tonal centers. This makes the Circle of Fifths a great way to map out both major and minor scales on guitar. What’s even more guitar-friendly is how the fretboard allows you to use the same scale shapes in every key by simply shifting positions. While piano players deal with completely different fingerings per key, guitarists can rely on movable patterns. You can also use the circle as a songwriting tool—creating chord progressions by moving around the wheel in fifths for a natural, familiar sound. The Circle of Fifths on guitar is usually portrayed as a circle with pitches arranged by the number of sharp and flat notes in their respective keys. The circle moves around by fifth intervals. For example, usually at the top of the circle is the C, then immediately to the right of it is the G, and then to the right of that is the D, etc. The circle is one of the best tools for any musician and will show you which notes and chords work together. This is not only great for finding chords for when you're trying to write a song, but also great if you're trying to jam along to a song. It's especially great for incorporating scales into songs.
