One cannot visit New Orleans and not get a Muffuletta, can one? I, for one, cannot. And why not go to the originator of the sandwich, Central Grocery. Because they’re closed, that’s why. An old brick wall of an adjacent building that was taller than the building Central Grocery was in blew over in hurricane Ida several years ago, crashing through and destroying their shop. Unfortunately, it is taking a crazy long time for them to rebuild. Fortunately, they’re now selling pre-made Muffulettas at several locations around town. So while we missed out on the experience of Central Grocery this time, at least we get to taste it. And what a sandwich it is. As flavorful as it is big.
