Disco music got its start in the late 1960s in discotheques in Europe, then America in the heart of many cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. In 1974, the genre had its first number one hits - "Rock the Boat" by Hues Corporation, "Love's Theme" by Love Unlimited Orchestra, and "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" by MFSB. When "Saturday Night Fever" was released in 1977, disco had become the dominant genre in popular music. Every city in America had it own discotheque and every record label had artists recording disco music, and mainstream artists like Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, Cher, and Paul McCartney had released disco or disco-style hits. On July 17, 1979, Disco Demolition Night took place inbetween games of a Chicago White Sox doubleheader. After blowing up a dumpster of disco records, disco-hating fans stormed the field, causing the forfeit of the second game. The popularity of disco took a swift and sudden downturn. That December, this album was one of dozens of Christmas disco albums that flooded the market. Google doesn't have much on "Disco Belles" so if anyone out there has info on the band or this album, please let us know. In 1981, Lipps Inc. released "Funkytown", the last disco hit to hit number one. Within a year, disco had all but disappeared from the charts. It would eventually morph into rap and hip-hop in the 1980s and experiences a resurgence now and then in popular culture.
