A Story of the Obudu People High above the lowlands of Cross River State, where the clouds rest gently on green earth and the wind carries old songs, lies the land of the Obudu people, stretched across the Obanliku Hills. It is a quiet place—rich in culture, belief, and mystery—where nature itself seems to listen before it speaks. The people of this land are known for peace, for love, and for a way of life that flows like a river—soft, steady, and deep. But among all their traditions, there is one truth that has puzzled strangers for generations: In Obudu, men speak one language, and women speak another. And this is the story the elders tell. The Birth of the Twins Long ago, when the hills were younger and the spirits still walked freely among humans, there lived a woman who gave birth to twins—a boy and a girl. They came from the same womb, on the same day, under the same sky. The people celebrated, for twins were a sign of blessing. The children grew together—running through fields, climbing rocks, laughing in the same breath. But when they reached the age of five, something unusual happened. They began to speak. The Question of the Sister One evening, as the sun dipped behind the hills, the girl turned to her brother and asked: “Brother, how come I cannot speak the language you speak— yet we are twins, born of the same mother?” The boy looked at her, confused, for he understood her words, yet his tongue moved differently when he spoke. Disturbed by the mystery, the twins went to their parents and asked: “Father, Mother—why do we not speak the same language, though we came from the same womb?” The Father’s Explanation Their father sat them down beneath a tree older than memory and spoke gently: “My son, in this land, a male child speaks the language of his father. And my daughter, you speak the language of your mother.” He continued: “I understand both of you. Your mother understands both of you. But I do not speak your language, my daughter— and your mother does not speak your brother’s.” The children were silent. Then the boy asked: “How did this begin?” The Blessing of the Gods Their father smiled and said: “This is not a curse. It is the blessing of the gods upon our people.” He explained that long ago, the Obudu people were known for their honesty, transparency, peace, and love for one another. The gods, pleased with their harmony, chose a special way to mark them—not with wealth, not with power, but with diversity within unity. “We are not different from other people,” the father said. “We are simply blessed in a special way.” A Mystery Without Answer The twins were amazed. They looked at each other and said: “Then something sacred must have happened, for this is unlike any other people.” And indeed, no one—not elders, not priests, not scholars—has ever given a full explanation. Yet the truth remains. The Living Reality Till this very day, in the Obudu community of the Obanliku Hills: Men speak one language Women speak another Parents understand both Children inherit the tongue of their gender Marriage does not change it Birth does not alter it Nature herself preserves the pattern. And yet—there is no conflict. Understanding flows where words differ. Peace thrives where difference exists. The Moral of the Obudu People The elders say: “This is how nature chose to show us love.” Not by making everyone the same—but by teaching that difference does not mean division. The Obudu people live as proof that: Diversity can be peaceful Difference can be loving Mystery can coexist with harmony Closing Wisdom So when strangers ask why the Obudu people are this way, the elders simply say: “Nature blessed us. And this is how she chose to show it.” And the hills remain silent witnesses— guarding a secret that has never needed explanation, only respect.
