Today is the day we anticipated for years! This day (December 9th, 2023) is the day that the state of the art Doppelmayr D-Line chairlift opened to the public at Sunday River Maine. Here to celebrate the new chairlift is Maine's finest athlete Donnie Pelletier. For more than 40 years it's predecessor (The Barker Mountain Express) has carried millions of passengers throughout it's lifetime, and has been subject for a replacement since it's rebuild in the late 90's. This new chairlift called the Barker 6 will be a stunning innovation for all New England ski areas, and for all Boyne resorts. Here's to the start of a great season for Barker! The Lift: Built in 2023, the Barker 6 is a six person detachable chairlift that travels from the Barker lodge to the summit of Barker Mountain. It is manufactured by Doppelmayr, and is in Doppelmayr's D-Line class of chairlift. The ride takes a little more than 4 minutes to reach the summit, and carries less in capacity than the old quad at 2,418 riders per hour, compared to 3,000 from the old Barker Express. There are many features that are included in a Doppelmayr D-Line class, which include some of the following: Doppelmayr Direct Drive, automated wait gates, a chairkit loading conveyor that can rise vertically up & down (to assist with beginner skiers and riders), contour loading, automated restraining bars, heated seats, red bubbles, line and station announcements, carrier parking in both terminals, and haul rope de-icing. It also has multiple operator tablets at both terminals to overview all basic lift functions, and to monitor wind speed at certain towers. Barker 6 has a top speed of 6 meters per second, which is the same speed as it's older sister, the Jordan 8. The lift runs on a slightly different alignment compared to the old Barker Express from years past, instead starting on lookers right of the snowmaking pond. This was done to prevent guests from traveling directly over the pond, and to focus the loading corral towards loading in one direction onto the lift while waiting in the base area.
