International Publicist Michelle Tennant Nicholson, Chief Creative Officer http://www.WasabiPublicity.com conducts her #ThriveInFive interview series. She asks 5 questions in 5 minutes. By the way, this is a great way to practice pitching yourself to others. Try it at home! LOU ANNE WELLFORD MAKES A DIFFERENCE I’m an emergency physician, a front-line worker if you will. I’ve spent my entire career caring for anyone who arrives in the emergency department. It doesn’t matter your race, religion, whether you are a citizen. It doesn’t matter if you have insurance or what language you speak. We care for all comers in the Emergency Department. We’ve been doing this for years, every day, regardless of pandemics or politics. We have always been the safety net for patients in the medical system. And while I am still actively practicing, more recently I have started writing medical narratives, demonstrating experiences with life-altering illnesses to allow others a glimpse into this world in which I have been immersed for decades. WHY EVERYONE SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO DR. WELLFORD I’ve been practicing emergency medicine for 30 years. I’ve seen just about everything you can imagine and even some things unimaginable. There have been many tragic and poignant stories and other heartwarming ones. In the ED, I may have a CEO of a Fortune 500 company in the bed next to a homeless vet or a drug addict. But a medical emergency, when you experience that loss of control over your life for however long, it’s a great equalizer. It serves as a reminder that we’re all just humans struggling with the same issues. In the hectic environment of the ED, it’s often hard to find the time to talk to my patients as much as I’d like. But when I have had the opportunity, I often learned amazing things about the person’s life. HOW DR. WELLFORD'S MESSAGE CAN HELP YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE After a friend’s brush with death, I became very interested in telling some of these medical stories that I’ve encountered over the years. When you read a story, you become immersed in that world for a period of time. I would like to open up the medical world for the lay public and start discussions about important issues, such as organ donation or the definition of true beauty. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed teaching medical students and residents but I would love to bring my years of experience to a larger audience. I think it’s important for people to see the physical, emotional and financial toll of an illness or disease on both the patient and family, but also the unexpected blessings that are often discovered by those on that journey. Experiencing a medical drama vicariously may perhaps remind the reader or listener of the true priorities in life. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ACCORDING TO DR. WELLFORD We need to remember that we are all on this journey of life together. None of us knows all the answers or where and when the journey ends. But we all have a story in us. If we just take time to truly listen to those around us and hear their story, we may learn something and have a better understanding of what drives each other. That’s why I’ve become so impassioned about telling these stories. The beauty of books and written stories is that they outlive their authors and can touch the hearts and minds of people far and wide. HOW TO CONNECT WITH DR.
