The title track from the German duo Pretty Lightning fourth long-player ‘Jange Bowls’. For over a decade, the duo comprising Christian Berghoff and Sebastian Haas have been busy dealing in swampy, fuzzed-out delta blues with a penchant for strung-out psychedelic drones and on their latest effort, picking up where 2017’s ‘The Rhythm of Ooze’, they return sounding better than ever. If you ever wondered what’d happen if two best friends who share a collective mission to not take life too seriously spent just as much time soaking up the muddy blues of Mississippi as they did the kosmisch experimentations of West Germany (the pair also play in Krautrock collective Datashock) then Pretty Lightning are your answer. Unsurprising, then, that as often as their sound is indeed full to the brim with crunch, swagger and feedback, they’re also just capable of easing off on that oft-abused accelerator and dealing in something more far hypnotic and drone-like. Opening track ‘Swamp Ritual’ is, funnily enough, about as swampy and ritualistic as Pretty Lightning get, serving up a piece of languid, slow-burning instrumental blues before unfolding into the blown-out garage-rock stomper ‘Jangle Bowls’. Where ‘Greyhound’ takes you on a journey through some wide-screen, hallucinogenic psych-pop, songs like ‘123 Eternity’ and ‘Ra Ra Ra’ see the duo swap the never-ending highways for the cosmos; their scuzzy instrumentation delivered with a far-out motorik gusto that charts similar territory to the likes of Wooden Shjips and King Gizzard. Part of what makes this album such a ride from start to finish is the band’s uncompromising ability to jerk between high-octane, fuzzed-out face-melters and more pared-back, hypnotic moments. ‘Voo Doo Blues’ does both: stripped down to its bare bones, the song is a piece of dirty, straight-up delta blues but in the final minute some woozy, almost-spooky synths make the track even more mesmerising than those slowly-churning, gritty riffs already had. ‘Boogie At The Shrine’ is another trancey psychedelic affair, as is the sprawling seven-minute album closer ‘Shovel Blues’, both hinting at the band’s more esoteric Eastern influences Since their formation over a decade ago, Pretty Lightning have been a riotous presence in the European neo-psych movement; taking their dizzying garage-blues across the UK and the mainland on countless occasions, appearing at a number of festivals along the way and sharing the stage with the likes of Moon Duo, Clinic, Kikagaku Moyo and Night Beats, to name just a few. ‘Jangle Bowls’ arrives following ‘The Rhythm of Ooze’ , 2015’s ‘A Magic Lane of Light and Rain’ and their 2012 debut ‘There Are Witches in the Woods’. PRAISE FOR PRETTY LIGHTNING “The pair matched delta blues sounds against decayed psychedelia, fuzzed out blues against lengthy, drone-inspired excursions.” Clash Magazine “Stomping garage-blues rhythms and unremitting motoric drones.” New Noise Magazine “In-your-face and twisted psychedelic blues-rock" Music & Riots Magazine “A heady dose of raw, twisted psychedelic-blues.” Psychedelic Baby Magazine
