How Gender Quotas Work

Since women are highly underrepresented in the business world, companies have started to adopt gender quotas. Why do we care about more women's representation in the business world? Because studies have shown that diversity affects the performance of companies positively. Gender quotas started as a practice to increase women's representation in legislative bodies, now being adopted in other fields. Women consist of more than half of the college graduates in Europe, yet their representation in executive positions is much less than men. To tackle this issue, the EU is getting ready to implement a new law, that European countries' big companies will have at least 40% of their board members women. Countries already giving incentives to companies for gender quotas, are also showing better results in gender equality indexes.
