The 2025 Bihar election verdict has established beyond doubt that 74-year-old Nitish Kumar, even after 20 years in power, still remains the most trusted leader in the state. The NDA comprising BJP, Nitish Kumar JDU, Chirag Paswan's LJP(RV), Jitan Ram Manjhi's HAM(S) and Upendra Kushwaha's RLM was heading to bag at least 202 seats in the 243-member Bihar Assembly. BJP has emerged as the largest party with JDU close behind. LJP(RV) has dramatically improved its strike rate and lived up to the trust reposed in Chirag Paswan's party by the NDA. For the Mahagathbandhan, the defeat has come as a massive blow. RJD's tally has been reduced to one-third of its 2020 seat tally. The Congress has yet again proved to be the weak link as it managed to win only 6 out of the 61 seats it contested. What has worked in the NDA favour has been the strong support of women voters and their faith in Nitish Kumar's governance record. Plus, unlike in 2020, the NDA leadership ensured full coordination among allies. The Mahagathbandhan seems to have been undone by projecting a narrative that failed to enthuse the voters. Aggressive EBC-centric push by the Congress failed to break Nitish Kumar's hold on the extremely backward castes. Rahul Gandhi's vote-chori campaign failed to strike a chord with the voters. The MGB parties also lacked a common narrative. While Rahul Gandhi focused on vote theft, RJD's Tejashwi Yadav tried to draw attention to jobs and bread-and-butter issues.
