José Greco, born Costanzo Greco on December 23, 1918, in Montorio nei Frentani, Italy, was a legendary flamenco dancer and choreographer. He emigrated to the United States as a child and began dancing in Brooklyn with his sister Norina at a young age. Greco made his professional debut in 1937 at the Hippodrome Theatre in Manhattan. He became well-known for his performances with La Argentinita and later her sister, Pilar López. In 1949, he formed the José Greco Dance Company, which toured extensively and helped popularize Spanish dance in America. Throughout his career, Greco appeared in several films, including "Sombrero" (1953), "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956), and "Ship of Fools" (1965). He received numerous honors, including being knighted by the Spanish government and receiving four honorary doctorates. Greco retired from the stage in the mid-1990s but continued to teach and inspire others. He passed away on December 31, 2000, leaving behind a legacy of passion and dedication to flamenco dance. Around the World in 80 Days is a 1956 American adventure film directed by Michael Anderson . It is based on the novel of the same name by Jules Verne . The film won five Academy Awards and other awards.
