[NOTE: Always give it an hour or two after a video is first uploaded for the HD version to appear, although this series was virtually fished out of the trash and pieced back together so the quality is not best at any rate.] The infamous "lost series" between Canada and the USSR. The series was frowned on by the NHL because it was organized by the WHA to promote their new and of course struggling league. Featured Bobby Hull who was still playing at a high level, an aging but still strong Gordie Howe, and Gerry Cheevers, the long time goalie of the Boston Bruins then playing with the Cleveland Crusaders, was the goalie of choice. Some of the players in this series also took part in the Summit Series two years earlier including Frank Mahovlich, Pat Stapleton, and infamous "the goal" scorer Paul Henderson. Also on the team were a collection of WHA all-stars, most of whom had played in the NHL such as Andre Lacroix who played on a line with Bobby Hull because Lacroix was a top level play maker and could skate well enough to keep up with Hull who was a notoriously fast skater and tremendously strong. The series was for most part not as chippy and violent as the 1972 series which featured vicious incidents like Bobby Clarke deliberately breaking the ankle of the top Soviet player Kharlamov with his stick. Ironically the Canadian team in 72 justified their recourse to goon tactics by claiming the Soviets hooked and slashed and would not fight like men. The Soviets played European hockey where fighting was prohibited and would get you suspended so they did not fight period (they would face extreme discipline from Soviet hockey officials which afterall was a brutal totalitarian state) and the Canadians, who were then as violent as the NHL had ever been with the Philadelphia Flyers just rising to infamy status for bullying, intimidating, and beating their way to championships. Paul Henderson later lamented Bobby Clarke's vicious assault on the top Soviet player calling it embarrassing and criminal. Gordie Howe showed complete class in the 1974 series and when a blood-thirsty media who wanted violence as much as fans attempted to get Howe to justify an ugly incident involving defensemen Rick Ley who bloodied one of the Soviet players by accusing the Soviets of hooking and slashing, Howe responded by saying "sure they hook and slash, but we are note exactly angels in that regard are we?" Howe, "Mr. Hockey," was notorious for elbows and two handers.
