Max V. Limb reconstruction pioneer Cancer survivor 6 Photos When Max was told he had a tumor the size of a football surrounding his scapula and he would have to face amputation or worse, he had a lot of questions. What would life be like without an arm? Would I live through this? Would my family be OK? Then Max was referred to UCSF and a different way of thinking, one that asks, why be bound by traditional solutions when you can invent better ones? The idea: Save the arm and the patient’s way of life. It started with a new custom-designed shoulder, 10 hours of replacement surgery and months of rehab. And it ended with hope and a second chance. But then more tumors appeared, lower in his arm this time, leading Dr. Richard O’Donnell to suggest something never before tried in orthopedic history: replace the elbow as well. And Max had the courage and confidence in his UCSF team, including elbow reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Lisa Lattanza, to say yes, let’s try it. Eight months later, a small miracle occurred. Against all odds and reasonable expectation, a cancer survivor and lifetime bowler went to his favorite alley with friends and family, lifted a 10-pound ball and started the next phase of his life.
