Hamas has reportedly stepped back from governing Gaza following the recent ceasefire with Israel, signalling a major shift in control of the region. AFP reports that the militant group will not participate in post-war governance or transitional administration, effectively relinquishing authority over the Gaza Strip while remaining a core part of the Palestinian fabric. Despite stepping back, Hamas reportedly deployed 7,000 operatives to maintain order in areas vacated by the IDF, conducting a limited show of force to ensure stability and track Israeli collaborators. This marks the first public appearance of its internal security forces since the 2024 truce. On the hostage front, Hamas confirmed to Israel that 20 captives taken in 2023 are still alive. According to the Wall Street Journal, their release could occur as early as October 12, with messages relayed through Arab mediators. Israel is reportedly prepared to receive the hostages, though a Monday release appears more likely. Of the total captives, 20 are alive, 26 are confirmed dead, and the fate of 2 remains unknown.
