The Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 was a pivotal event in the complex history of the island, marked by longstanding tensions between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. The crisis unfolded in the aftermath of a coup d'état by supporters of enosis (union with Greece) in Cyprus, which led to the deposition of President Makarios. Seizing this opportunity, Turkey invoked a treaty of guarantee and intervention, deploying its military forces to Cyprus in July 1974. The Turkish intervention aimed to protect the rights of the Turkish Cypriot minority on the island. The conflict resulted in a de facto division of Cyprus, with the northern part under Turkish control and the southern part remaining predominantly Greek Cypriot. Despite numerous diplomatic efforts and UN resolutions, the situation has persisted, and the division of Cyprus remains a contentious issue in international relations. The aftermath of the Turkish invasion has had lasting effects on the political and social landscape of Cyprus. The internationally unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established in the northern part of the island, contributing to ongoing disputes between Turkey, Greece, and the Republic of Cyprus. The presence of Turkish troops in the north, along with the displacement of thousands of Greek and Turkish Cypriots, has created enduring challenges for achieving a comprehensive resolution to the Cyprus issue, making it a persistent point of contention in regional and international diplomacy.
