It's been two weeks since federal law enforcement agencies in the Department of Justice were given the green light to enforce immigration laws under Title 8 of the U.S. Code. In that time, agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration have carried out numerous arrests in western Washington of people in the country illegally. Reames heads up the DEA Seattle field office, which oversees the DEA's operations in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Alaska. “A lot of the couriers in drug trafficking organizations are illegally present in the United States. Many of the mid-level and senior leadership of drug trafficking organizations are also illegally present in the United States," he said. DEA Seattle has been sharing their involvement in recent arrests on social media, including a rape suspect who the agency arrested this week in Seattle. "DEA’s focus on fentanyl hasn’t changed," Reames said. "What has changed is the immigration authority the DEA now possesses gives us another tool to combat fentanyl traffic. This new authority gives us the additional ability to arrest illegal immigrants who are engaged in fentanyl trafficking and other crimes.” Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials in Seattle haven't released statistics on how many immigration arrests have taken place since the Trump administration entered the White House in January with a promise to carry out mass deportations. On Friday, ICE officials said there were 864 arrests nationwide in a single day. ICE has said the agency is taking a "worst first" approach, with enforcement targeting known criminals for removal. On Tuesday, ICE carried out a weekly immigration enforcement flight from the King County International Airport - Boeing Field in Seattle. KOMO News recorded a video of detainees being taken off the flight Tuesday morning, with a different group of detainees boarding the flight approximately an hour later. ICE officials declined to provide any data on how many people were removed on the enforcement flight, or if all were known offenders with prior criminal records. A spokesperson for the agency said Tuesday's enforcement flight was part of standard ICE operations which are carried out weekly.
