In this video, I’ll take you step by step through how I harvest my giant melon, get it ready for weighing, and share the methods I use to grow watermelons that can really compete. When to Harvest a Giant Watermelon: Knowing when to pick your melon is the most important part. Harvest too early and it won’t reach its full size. Harvest too late and the melon can split or rot. Here are the signs I look for: The tendril closest to the stem turns brown and dries up. The belly spot (the part touching the ground) turns from white to a creamy yellow. The rind becomes tougher and less shiny. A deep “thunk” sound when tapped compared to a higher-pitched immature sound. These signs together tell me the melon is ready for harvest and weighing. How I Harvest & Weigh the Melon: Harvesting a giant watermelon takes some care. I cut the stem close to the vine with sharp pruners, making sure not to damage the fruit. Because these melons are so heavy, I use a tarp, padded sling, or even a friend’s help to lift it safely. For weighing, I place the melon carefully on a sturdy digital scale to get an accurate reading for the contest. Tips for Growing Giant Watermelons: Choose the right variety – Carolina Cross is the most famous for size. Prepare rich soil – I amend with compost and organic fertilizer to give the vines steady nutrition. Plant with space – Give each vine plenty of room to spread. Prune for size – Once fruits set, I limit the vine to one or two melons so all the plant’s energy goes into them. Water deeply – Consistent watering keeps melons growing fast, but avoid overwatering late in the season. Feed often – Fertilize regularly with a balance of nitrogen early, then phosphorus and potassium later for fruit growth. Protect the fruit – Place a board or straw under the melon to prevent rotting. This is the fun part of gardening – seeing all the hard work pay off in a giant watermelon harvest. I can’t wait to see how mine stacks up in the Watermelon Warz!
