Volcán Barú via Paso Ancho | Hiking Panama's High Point the HARD Way

For the big hike of my vacation, I drove from Boquete to Volcan (leaving at 2:30 in the morning) and met my guide Chaly who took me up this volcano which is Panama's high point. Hiking Volcan Baru requires a guide and you have to drive up a really rough dirt road in order to reach the start at a ranger station. At the Volcan Baru ranger station they confirm you have a guide and have you sign in. We were not the first people to leave that morning and we passed many people about an hour into our hike. They were camping in the crater at the top of the volcano. We started the hike in jungle forest before reaching an environment of volcanic rock and scrub. The trail became increasingly steep but they also provide stairs for some of it. The weather became chilly until we reached the crater and emerged into the sun. At that point the weather was wonderful to the top and from up there we could see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at the same time - truly incredible! This video will provide an overview of the terrain and challenges that you will encounter. Hiking Volcan Baru via the Paso Ancho route is more difficult than coming up from Boquete. That route is longer and used by offroad jeeps to reach the summit. It is also less interesting and that is why I decided to hike from the Volcan side, though it did mean a very early morning.
