Original title: Navigatia pe Bega The Bega Canal, over 100 km long, was built during the Habsburg Empire, initially to drain the flood lands around Timisoara, then to provide transport by water, the most lucrative kind at the time. Thus, for almost two centuries, the Bega has been a way of conveyance both for passengers, as well as for goods, which were taken as far as the port of Rotterdam. The communist years brought about the interruption of transport on the Bega Canal. The Iron Curtain and the conflict between Tito and Stalin caused passenger boats to sail for the last time in 1967. It took over 50 years for boats to glide on the surface of the Bega again.
