In this video, we trace how the Black Death — the Great Plague itself — devastated Europe between 1347 and 1353. From rumors coming out of Asia to the siege of Caffa and the flight of Genoese galleys; from the first outbreaks in Constantinople and Messina to the panic in Genoa — we show how trade, pilgrimages, and urban networks accelerated the spread of infection. We explain how authorities responded: chaos in Sicily, more coordinated actions in Venice, the emergence of the forty-day quarantine, and efforts to preserve order and provide proper burials. We revisit the main epicenters of contagion — Marseille, Pisa, and Florence. Next, we follow the plague’s advance into the heart of the continent: Avignon and the papal court, the physician Guy de Chauliac, and medical treatises in France; the coasts, the University of Paris, and England, where records tell of deserted manors. We reach Central Europe, Poland, and the lands of Rus’, where chronicles record fear and devastation. We explain why the Great Plague returned in waves and how it reshaped Europe’s economy, governance, and daily life. This is not just a story of disease, but of human choices made during one of Europe’s greatest trials. #documentary
