I used to be sceptical about solar panels. I thought they were mainly about CO₂ reduction and long-term returns — 10 years down the line — and I wasn’t convinced the investment was worth it. When I first spoke to CRG, they asked me one question: what are you looking to achieve with solar panels? For me, it was simple — I wanted to reduce my monthly bills, and I wanted that to happen straight away. After that meeting, I spoke to other businesses using large amounts of electricity, including suppliers running heavy machinery overnight. What stood out was that their solar finance costs were actually less — almost half — of what the panels were generating, even in winter. When I looked into it myself, I found exactly the same. My monthly bills dropped significantly in summer, and they were still lower in winter. Financially, it made more sense than putting the same £5,000–£10,000 onto the mortgage. Once we added EV tariffs and a battery system into the mix, the numbers became even clearer. Charging the battery overnight on a low-rate tariff and exporting electricity during the day has completely changed how we think about energy. In summary, we now have a system that looks good on the house — but more importantly, we’re saving money every single month.
