The Squid and The Whale is an interesting look at divorce and the impact that it has on everyone involved but especially the children. Because a divorce is such an adult concept that it can be hard for the kids involved to understand fully. How can the parents that love you can no longer love one another. And it's a tale that is close to the heart of director Noah Baumbach who himself had witnessed a separation from his parents. An adolescent child watching the two people that you look up to, the ones that guide your thinking and view on the world all of the sudden breaking up. Leaving you confused on why this has happened and the harsh reality that sometimes you have to grow up faster than you would like and must deal with the emotions that come with this kind of situation. And so you ask questions like is it the fault of you, the child they conceived and brought into this world, the reason that brought them as close as they can, could now be the reason for a separation. Or is it the idea that two people, once in love, once gazing at each other longing that their eyes never look away from the other, was never in love in the first place.
