A buddy of mine who lives in Alaska told me Anchorage is a dump. It's bad, they say. Crime, drugs, poverty, homelessness. I don't think I've ever been told so many times that a downtown is so dangerous. Like everyone told me - I wouldn’t be downtown Anchorage at night. Our neighborhoods are scary. It’s rundown here. Well I hear that a lot, and I always wonder - is it as bad as people say or do Alaska people have any idea what they're talking about. Trapped way up here with no frame of reference. I was told Anchorage was never really beautiful. It's always been fringe dirty. Kinda unkempt. But people told me - at least back in the day, we tried. In the 1980s Alaska was rich in oil money, so they used all that cash to pave the roads and build bigger buildings. From what I hear, nothing has been done here since. It’s getting way more liberal here now. A lot of California people have moved up here and changed the politics a little, so they are a lot more soft on crime. And clearly homelessness. You can’t use plastic bags here anymore. Housing is way more expensive. Drug use has gone up and the apartments and the roads and the schools have all just gotten worse. The poverty rate in Alaska is lower than the US average. But they’re worried about that. There hasn’t been a lot of job growth here since the oil boom of the 80s. Back then everyone made bank. They say Anchorage’s population is on course to drop by 10%. Schools are closing, businesses are closing here. The population is aging here. One reporter said Anchorage may be hallowed out like a rust belt town one day. Anchorage is just like any other struggling American city, except it is surrounded by mountains on two sides. The cold up here is relative. Anchorage is only the 22nd coldest city in the country. There are places in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Vermont that are way colder. Anchorage broke their own record for snowfall this past winter. They got 10 feet. It was collapsing roofs and it sent all the homeless people into the shelters. There were a bunch of things I was told I needed to do here and I wanted to try every single one. Like when would I come back here ever again right? They call this Anchor town. Someone told me - it’s surprisingly hip here Nick. We have actual art galleries and theaters and breweries. Well I don’t do those things. That’s for tourists. I like to see how the real locals live. ►Join my community to get exclusive members-only access to additional content: / @nickjohnson OTHER VIDEO SERIES ►The Deep South: • Deep South Road Trip ►Hawaii: • The Hawaiian Adventure ►Great Lakes: • The Great Lakes Road Trip ►California: • Everything About California Cities ►Texas: • The Great Texas Road Trip ►The Midwest: • Midwest Trip 2022. ►The Mountain West: • Mountain West Road Trip ►California Road Trip: • California Road Trip 2022 ►Appalachia: • Appalachia Road Trip ►Florida: • The state of Florida Road Trip Advent... ►Unboxing America: • Unboxing America If you want to move to a city, but need help deciding on which city is the best, I can help you.
