It was designed to operate in the Northern areas of the Soviet Union. It can carry troops, weapons, ammunition and other military cargo over difficult terrain in remote areas. It can be used as a front line load carrier for anything from ammunition to fuel. It can be also used as a medical evacuation vehicle. Production of the GT-SM commenced in 1967. It seems that this tracked cargo carrier has been exported to the Soviet allies. Its civil version, a GAZ-71, was also produced in large numbers. The GT-SM has a payload capacity of 1000 kg. It is intended to carry cargo or ammunition to forward areas. It can also carry 10 troops. Troop seats can be converted into sleeper berths for two. Cargo area is covered with bows and canvas cover. This tracked carrier can tow trailers or artillery pieces with a maximum weight of 2000 kg. However the trailer can be towed at a cost of reduced vehicle payload. The GT-SM has great cross-country mobility. This vehicle can go over swamps, sand and snow. It can be also used in mountainous terrain. The cab accommodates driver and one passenger. The GT-SM is not armored. However add-on armor kit can be fitted to most vital areas of this tracked carrier. Also the GT-SM has no armament. This tracked carrier is powered by a ZMZ-71 petrol engine, developing 115 hp. Engine is located behind the driving compartment. It separates driver and vehicle commander from the troop/cargo area. Vehicle has a 4-speed manual gearbox. However this vehicle is thirsty on fuel due to its petrol engine. On hard surface road fuel consumption of a fully loaded vehicle with trailer attached is about 100-150 liters for 100 kilometers. Fuel consumption off-road is 200 liters for 100 kilometers. The GT-SM has a watertight body and is fully amphibious. On water it is propelled by its tracks. Amphibious speed on water is up to 6 km/h. This tracked cargo carrier can operate at temperature range of -50°C to +40°C. A number of versions of this vehicle have been produced. Only military versions are listed here. Variants GT-SM-1D is an updated version. The original petrol engine was replaced by a more powerful and more fuel efficient diesel engine. It is powered by a GAZ-5441.10 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 173 hp. Maximum road speed is 60 km/h. GT-SM-2D has a fully-enclosed cargo area that accommodates 6 passengers. The cargo is fitted with autonomous heater. This vehicle can operate autonomously up to 72 hours in remote areas. MT-MBU light multi-purpose armored vehicle. Its production commenced in 1969.
