Sometimes, it’s a necessary evil to let go of a character, but to violently kill off a show’s central character, a character that’s been through hell and back, suffered through abuse and insurmountable grief, and finally found love? There seriously has to be something happening behind the scenes. Here is why Bea Smith left Wentworth. Phenomenal actress Danielle Cormack has been a staple on the iconic and hit New Zealand TV drama Wentworth since its very first episode aired in 2013. And up until her tragic exit at the shocking ending of Season 4 in 2016, Bea Smith has faithfully served as the Wentworth Prison’s top dog. That’s why it came across as the ultimate jaw-dropping moment when she was impaled on a screwdriver/shank held by Joan “The Freak” Ferguson, the prison’s former governor and now out of control psychopath. Frankly, up to that moment, everyone kind of thought Bea was going to snap and outsmart The Freak and end that raging rivalry that has been going on for years. So why? Did Cornack have a secret feud behind the scenes with a fellow actor? Upset the producers? Did she just want to move on? She did go on to play in other TV shows, earning a main role in thriller series Secret City, as well as appear on the crime drama Deep Water, the drama series Jack Irish, and more. The answer to why Wentworth killed off their central character is a lot more dramatic than you think. It’s because, and to quote the producers, for “dramatic purposes.” Literally. The show’s executive producer, Jo Porter, said that the decision didn’t come easy. He initially didn’t want to “say farewell to a much-loved and revered character like Bea Smith.” He also added that “This decision was particularly hard as it meant also saying goodbye to Danielle Cormack.” Ultimately, he did make that “incredibly difficult decision” for both dramatic and artistic purposes and for another reason; the producers wanted to make room for new storylines and characters to take center stage. After that, Porter said that “Wentworth has built a reputation for risk-taking, high emotion and bold storytelling, and once again, the season four finale proves no one is safe.” Fellow Wentworth actor, Robbie Magasiva, who plays Jackson surprisingly agrees with the decision to kill off Bea. He stated that it was a move that was “both risky and necessary.” Like the producers, he firmly believed that after four seasons, there was nowhere else Bea could go. Now, what does the brilliant actress herself believe? Was Danielle Cormack on board with her character being killed off by none other than The Freak? While she certainly benefited from being one of the famous and talked-about deaths in New Zealand TV history, Cornack was left reeling back from Bea’s death as she along with the fans believed that no one would dare kill off the beloved character. Cormack has stated that she grieved the character for some time. She divulged in an interview that “It was hard to leave the show and the character,” especially since she was known for being incredibly proud of her work on the show. To her, Season 4 represented some of her best work throughout her career. The fans’ opinions were a lot less...accepting. Immediately following Bea’s death, fans commented, “If Bea really is dead, I won't be able to watch S5. It's not Wentworth without Bea Smith.” Those who accepted Bea’s death objected to how it was told with one fan saying that “bea smith should have at least been allowed to win in death... to be with allie and Debbie, but they couldn't even give her that.” What are your thoughts on Bea’s death? Do you think she-- and Danielle Cormack-- deserved better? Let us know in the comments below!
