Why we can't call Aussie Oats Gluten Free?

This is another one of our most popular questions. Australia has long produced high-quality oats for human consumption. In the early 2000's a study was published on oats with the outcome being presented that oats contained gluten. This led to a subclause being added to the gluten-free labelling clause in the Food labelling standards in 2006, stating that no product containing oats could be called gluten-free in Australia and New Zealand. GF Oats discovered gluten-free oats in the USA in 2007 after oats received a gluten-free oats status followed by a certification by all relevant agencies including the USA Coeliac Society. GF Oats Australia introduced Australia to gluten-free oats in 2009. However it was not until then, we discovered the subclause in the labelling standards preventing us from calling oats gluten-free oats. We share our brand "The oats you can trust" as gluten friendly. We do have wheat-free on the packaging but unfortunately, there are no standards around calling oats wheat-free. Our oats meet the nil gluten detected standards set here in Australia around gluten. In 2016 we started working with a group of Australian oat farmers. They wanted to supply us with oats that were totally uncontaminated from gluten. They were able to grow the oats but had to invest and build a steaming and rolling plant to process the oats. This year, 2021, we are so proud to introduce Australia to the very first Aussie GF Oats. Unfortunately, the labelling laws have not been updated here in Australia and we are unable to call these Aussie GF Oats, Australian gluten-free oats. :(🥺 Each batch of oats has to meet a range of compliance criteria that arrives at our warehouse. One of these of course is gluten-free testing. We are working with various industry bodies to ensure that we get a labelling law change around gluten-free oats so that we can assist consumers in making the right choices around uncontaminated oats for them. If you are a Coeliac and would like to try these oats please follow your health practitioners advice.
