The environmental impact of AI: problem or solution?

Generative AI is environmentally costly, but humans as well. Hence just measuring the environmental cost of GenAI is not enough. We need to compare it to what its potentially substituting: human labor. In this video I present a paper which aims to measure the environmental impact of AI by doing so: Reconciling the contrasting narratives on the environmental impact of large language models (Ren et al.
