G DEVARAJAN FEST: SwaraRaagaGanga, on the 17 th death anniversary of G Devarajan, pays homage to the all time wonder of Malayalam movie field and comes out with four beautiful songs from him tuned for different lyricists. SONG No.3 Credits: Singer: Nandakumar MP Audio mixing and mastering: Deepak Varma Video editing: Meenakshi Mohan Description: Prem Varma Original credits: Movie: Manushyaputhran (1973) Lyrics: Vayalar Music: G.Devarajan Singer: K J Yesudas We continue the mini fest of Devarajan mash, this time with a lovely creation by Vayalar-Devarajan duo for the movie `Manushyaputhran' released in 1973. Directed by Baby-Rishi, the film, which beautifully explored the social theme of interfaith relationships, was well received by the progressive Malayalis. Narrating the story of the fishing folk and the then prevalent uncompromising stand on other communities was brought out in the film appreciably well. The movie gave a snapshot of the social fabric of those times with four leading actors Madhu, Jayabharathi, Vincent and Vidhubala. The last scene of the film definitely would have made the audience leave the theatre with a heavy heart and a grudge against the cruel society. Manushyaputhan has only three songs and the song Swarga sagarathil ninnu...sung by Yesudas is perhaps the most popular one among them. Vayalar has skillfully encased the synopsis of the story in a few lines of the love song with Vincent and Vidhubala appearing in it. The musical composition is amazing, not just because it's so pleasing to hear, but also the interesting way the notes are arranged such that the tune conforms to how a fisherman would sing. The real brilliance lies in deceiving the audience that it is a fisherman-type song not adhering to any carnatic note structures. But in reality, Devarajan composed this song with SudhaSaveri raga as the base, with minimal deviations from the raga scale. We are sure, you will hum it again and again.
