Most people will try a simple apology such as "I'm sorry." The problem with this type of approach is that it doesn't necessarily show your ex that you genuinely care about their emotions or understand how your actions affected them. So, you're going to need to dig in a bit deeper and start to understand exactly how your ex is feeling and reflect that back to them. Empathy is one of the key elements in getting an ex to forgive you. Next, you're going to want to share with your ex what your motives where for doing what you did. Obviously you probably weren't thinking about how your actions affected them. So what was on your mind and what was motivating them to do what they did? Tell them. This can show your ex that you did not intentionally try to hurt them. And after that, tell your ex that you regret the affect that your actions had and that you did not intend to hurt them. And finally apologize without defense. That is the secret to getting your ex to forgive you and to let go of the pain from the past so that the two of you can start to move closer again toward reconnection and rebuilding your relationship together.
