Russia's "special military operation" in Ukraine has been a disaster for its armed forces. The loss of nearly half a million troops, thousands of tanks and hundreds of aircraft has shocked the world. But an even more devastating blow has been the virtual expulsion of the Black Sea Fleet from Crimea. And this has happened despite the fact that Ukraine has no warships of its own - a situation that seemed impossible. At the start of the invasion in February 2022, the Ukrainian Navy had only one significant warship, the frigate Hetman Sahaidachny, which had to be sunk in the port of Nikolaev to prevent it from being captured by the Russians. It seemed that Russia had complete control over the sea. But these assumptions turned out to be wrong. When Russia launched a full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, its Black Sea Fleet consisted of 74 ships, the vast majority of which were based in occupied Crimea. However, in April of that year, the Ukrainians were able to locate the Black Sea Fleet's flagship, the guided missile cruiser Moskva. This ship became famous thanks to the events on Snake Island, when its crew demanded that the Ukrainian garrison surrender, receiving the response: "Russian warship, go f**k yourself!" The Ukrainian military sent a Bayraktar TB-2 drone to distract the enemy, then fired two Neptune anti-ship missiles from a coastal battery near Odessa. The attack caused the Moskva to catch fire, its ammunition to detonate, and the ship to sink on April 14. Russia tried to hide the reality, claiming that the cruiser sank due to a "fire on board." However, the incident was a serious blow to the prestige of the Russian Navy and Vladimir Putin personally. During the first year of the war, the Ukrainians used defensive deterrence tactics, stopping potential Russian amphibious operations west of the Dnieper. On June 30, 2022, they recaptured Zmeiny Island, and in late July, the UN-brokered Black Sea Grain Agreement was concluded. In addition, the large landing ship Saratov was destroyed. In July 2023, following Russia’s withdrawal from the grain deal, Ukraine went on the offensive. The main goal of the campaign was to weaken Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and isolate occupied Crimea. Ukrainian naval drones and missiles carried out increasingly precise strikes, demonstrating the growing effectiveness of Ukrainian drone technology. Special Operations Forces operations significantly complicated Russian military supply lines, and the reestablishment of control over the Boyko Ryshka oil platforms was another important success. In September 2023, Ukrainian missiles struck the Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol, killing some of the command staff. Overall, Ukraine has destroyed or damaged about a third of Russian warships in the Black Sea since the start of the war.
