I am using a 10" x 20" stretched canvas. I am using 4 small plastic shovels to add the colors I will use by depositing them in the areas where the sky, water, and rocks will go. I use a layer of wet paint, the colors of the ocean on the bottom portion of the canvas to help the next colors I add to flow more easily. The sky gets a layer of white paint as a base. I use my large silicone spatula to quickly spread the layers. Once I have the colors in the correct areas, I use an edge catcher to flow the paint across the canvas until I have coverage. I tilt the colors in the sky area and flow the paint onto an edge catcher, pool the paint and tilt the canvas to flow the paint back onto the canvas again. I need to add more paint before I finish tilting. I firm up the surface of the paint using the heat from my torch, so when I add the colors to the bottom, the sky will move less. I use the shovels to add a center strip down the middle of the water area and then tilt the canvas to flow the paint to fill in the area. There aren't enough paint colors to cover, I love the contrast the background adds ... I add the needed paint that adds the necessary coverage. I move the paint with a silicone basting brush and a small silicone spatula, just by dragging them across melding the dark background paint with the added top layer of lighter watercolors. I add some sky colors to the water using the edge of the spatula. I make rocks from wide ribbons of paint using the plastic shovel I created the mix of colors meant to make the rocks. I tilt the canvas to flow the paint, and after the recording stops, I add the shadows on the rocks using dark purple acrylic paint. All the paints I use are acrylic paints mixed with additives to help them flow more easily. All my colors are stored and mixed in squeeze bottles for ease of use... My regular "pouring" mixture -recipe, generally is 3/4 Floetrol with 1/4 (estimated) GAC800 from "Golden" (prevents cracking and adds shine to dry artwork.) Add paint to double the volume (or a little less paint) or as needed to get the desired viscosity, mix thoroughly. Amounts always depend on the viscosity and color saturation of the acrylic paint used, so the amounts of color needed will vary. I like to begin with half pouring mixture and half color. After that is mixed thoroughly, I add more pouring mixture until the viscosity (thickness) is like warm hone. If I want it thinner, I add more Pouring mixture. If the color is not strong enough, I add more pigment. When mixing colors, my amounts are always estimated and then altered to get the right consistency I like. I use plastic squeeze bottles with measurements on the side. I add a marble into the bottle to aid in the mixing process. Marbles work well but exercise caution if you end up with more than one because they will shatter in the mixture eventually. It's imperative (Important) that all mixture be shaken thoroughly again before using in any session every time! The consistency is usually medium "body" weight, but other weights are usable with minor adjustments. Every day I learn new things. I will never stop experimenting, and I am happy to share what I discover with you.
