This year for Tour de Fleece, I’m breaking tradition. Instead of spinning wool, I’m reaching for a fiber that’s older, native to this land, and deeply tied to cultural heritage — Acadian brown cotton. In this video, I reflect on the complicated feelings I have about the Fourth of July, why I chose to spin a non-fleece fiber during Tour de Fleece, and what it means to honor a history that’s often overlooked. I’ll share a bit about my time in Lafayette, Louisiana, the incredible work of Austin Clark, and the beautiful exhibit at the Hilliard Art Museum that changed the way I see this humble plant. Plus, I’ll show you how I card and spin this short-staple fiber on my great wheel — a quiet, meditative act of connection to the land, the past, and the people who kept this tradition alive.
