Jacksonville, Florida is sold as a city of sunshine, beaches, and booming growth but under overpasses, along the St. Johns River, and in quiet pockets of downtown, another story is unfolding. In 2025, the official Point-in-Time count recorded 1,009 people experiencing homelessness across Duval, Clay, and Nassau counties in a single night. Behind that number are families in cars, veterans in the woods off I-95, and parents doing everything they can to keep their kids safe. In this episode, we travel across Jacksonville’s 874 square miles from Hemming Park and the Acosta Bridge to hidden encampments along the river to uncover how rising rents, low wages, mental-health gaps, and limited recovery beds are pushing people to the edge. You’ll meet Sarah, a former retail manager now living in a tent near the St. Johns; Mike, a veteran trying to rebuild his life with help from outreach teams; and Lisa, a single mom fighting to keep hope alive while sleeping in her car near the beach. Their stories reveal a hard truth: in the “Sunshine State,” too many lives are still lived in the shadows. We also look at what’s changing. Jacksonville has invested $10 million into new shelter beds, outreach teams, and housing assistance. The JFRD PATH team has connected hundreds of people to services; organizations like Sulzbacher, Clara White Mission, and Family Promise are serving thousands of meals, providing beds, and helping families move into stable homes. A 49% drop in unsheltered homelessness since 2024 shows that when a city leans into compassion and coordination, lives can turn around but the work is far from over.
