About: Operation Cactus was a rapid Indian military intervention carried out in Maldives in November 1988, when armed mercenaries attempted to overthrow President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. As the capital city Malé fell under attack and hostages were taken, Maldives urgently sought international military assistance. When global powers hesitated, India responded within hours, launching one of the fastest overseas military operations in Indian history. Within just 16 hours, the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy executed Operation Cactus (1988), airlifting paratroopers to Hulhulé airport, securing Malé, rescuing hostages, and intercepting fleeing militants at sea. This decisive mission not only saved the Maldivian government but also established India as a regional security power in the Indian Ocean.
