In this video, I show how I created a badass joiners mallet out of some exotic hardwoods and some red oak. I made this mallet for use around the shop, but it looked so pretty that I ended up putting finish on it. The entire build took two days. The woods used are zebrawood, purple heart, maple, and red oak. The inside is weighted with lead fishing weights to make the mallet extra heavy. The handle was custom shaped out of red oak with a spokeshave to match my grip. No finish was applied to the handle, as I prefer the grip and feel of rough wood. The head of the mallet is secured to the handle with a double wedged mortise joint, the wedges are made from purple heart for aesthetic purposes. One face of the mallet is hard maple, and the other face is leather attached with double sided tape (for cases when you want to be sure not to leave a mark on a workpiece). The final weight of the mallet is 727 grams, or 1.6 pounds. The handle is 8" long, measured from the base of the mallet head. The head is 6 inches by 2 inches by 2 1/8 inches in size.
