Prince Kuhio Long Distance Race 2025

The 55th annual Prince Kuhio long distance outrigger canoe race was held on Saturday, March 22, 2025. The men's leg of the race started on Kalapaki beach in Lihue and ended outside the Kukui'ula small boat harbor in Po'ipu - a distance of about 13 miles. The second section, consisting of women's and mixed crews, ran from Kukui'ula small boat harbor to just outside the reef at Salt Pond beach - a distance of about 9 miles. Weather conditions were much better this year than last year, which was brutal, as noted by Tai Chi near the end of this video. Still, the wind speed from the east was about double what the forecast called for during the second section of the race. It was high enough that the battery life on my drone barely held for thirty minutes (expected to last 45). Unfortunately, the rapid drop in battery strength had me flying closer to land as the canoes approached the finish line. The result is that I had to use the zoom at greater lengths to get usable shots of the later crews to finish. So, the last several boats to finish the race are shown in pretty junk video 😢 - sorry about that. As always, many mahalos to everyone who worked to make sure the race happened. And, our hearts go out to the Chandler family and to all their friends who couldn't be with us at the race.
