Please join me for a tour of the beautiful Polish city of Poznań in a vintage tram Poznań's tram system is operated by Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne w Poznaniu Sp. z o.o. (MPK Poznań). It currently operates 18 daytime routes, 2 night routes and 3 tourist routes operated with heritage trams. The 87 kilometres (54 miles) tram system utilizes 1,435mm (4 ft 8 ½ in) gauge track. The system is mainly double track with a few exceptions such as the one way system around the town centre. The first horse trams began running in 1880 between the main station and the old market, the system quickly expended, but despite the need for a modern transport system the company found itself in financial difficulty due to some routes failing to attract enough passengers and the signage within the trams being written in German, leading to a boycott by the Polish majority. The financially troubled company was bought by the Poznań Horse Railway Society which obtained a concession and monopoly on tram transportation in the city. At the time there were only tram 20 cars in service. On 6th March 1898 electric trams were introduced on the expanding system.
