Thanks to efforts by the South Korean and Japanese governments the ethnic Koreans are being given a new life in their 'long-lost' homeland. STORYLINE: In the remote Russian island of Sakhalinsk a small group of ethnic Koreans is getting ready to return to South Korea. The Koreans never acquired Soviet or Russian citizenship in the 68 years since the Japanese empire forcibly moved their families from Korea. Now this small group is heading back to South Korea under a programme that aims to close this chapter on an often-overlooked tragedy in Asia's history. The forced resettlement saw thousands moved in the early 20th century to industrialise this fish-shaped island in the northwest Pacific off Russia's eastern coast and just north of Japan. Leafing through old photos Pak Den Dya, one of the ethnic Koreans, says she is grateful of being allowed back to Korea.
