Lots of cool geology between Jerome, Idaho and Caldwell, Idaho flying along the Snake River. First we show Earl Hardy Box Spring Canyon formed by a large spring. The Canyon is South of Wendell, ID. Rocks the form the canyon are composed of solidified lava flows from 2 large shield volcanoes. Next is Malad Gorge. It forms a 250 foot deep chasm where the river drops. The walls are formed from basalt lavas dating from 373,000 years ago. The Malad River was diverted to it's present location by an eruption about 52,000 years ago. Bruneau Dunes are located 18 miles south of Mountain Home, ID formed from an erosion of old lake shores (Lake Idaho), flooding, and steady wind. Bruneau Canyon is 800 feet deep formed by layers of basalt and lavas from shield volcanoes of Miocene and Pliocene age. (Information taken from the book Roadside Geology of Idaho).
