Ukraine is building new fortifications along the border with Russia between the Kursk and Sumy regions in preparation for a possible Moscow attack in response to the offensive in the Kursk region. Russian lawmaker Maria Butina claimed on Wednesday that the West was involved in the Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory and was thus "poking the bear" in a dangerous escalation. The United States and other Western backers of Ukraine have denied that they were informed beforehand of the surprise attack by Ukrainian forces.
