During one of our weekly tutorial sessions, we took a few minutes out to film Barb Barone working a provisional cast on. Provisional cast on is a technique used by knitters to cast on stitches temporarily. Later on in the project, you’ll remove the cast on stitches, put the knitted “loops” back on your needle and continue to work your project in the opposite direction. Why would you want to remove the cast on stitches? There are many reasons but here are a couple of examples. 1) you have a limited amount of yarn and you think you might run out before you finish your project. You can start with a provisional cast on and work the “body” of your project then come back and finish the “trim” with another yarn, if necessary. This works for mittens (work the cuff later) and sweaters (work the ribbed band later) and hats (work the brim later). You get the idea? 2) you want both edges of your project to look the same. After binding off your normal bind off edge, you come back to the cast on edge, remove your provisional cast on and bind off that edge too. (See Churchmouse Yarns and Tea “Easy Folded Poncho” for an example of this.)
