Recorded from IQC's NanoMRI conference 2015. Amir Safavi-Naeini from Standford University presents a background of work on silicon optomechanical structures. These are devices that allow control of propagation and interaction between light and sound on the surface of a silicon chip. In addition to allowing control over localized mechanical motion using the light field, we also observe effective optical nonlinearities. This talk introduces some of the important concepts and the physics that can be observed in these devices. He also presents very recent experimental results. .
