This meant there is no designated Hillfort number category assignment. I will include this on this text when the website is back up and running. So after yet another unsuccessful attempt of a decent windless flight at the Strumble or in fact anywhere so far this year, I finally had a nice smooth flight at this location. Every flight this year has been despite the winds and most footage I did obtain was really too windy according to the app I use. 'Pen Caer' also known as 'Strumble Head' is almost as far west as you can get in south west Wales. It is closer to Ireland here than to Cardiff the capital of Wales. The scenery here is absolutely breathtaking on a fine day but can be foreboding and windswept on wet and windy days. The large headland with its volcanic rock formations are imbued with the workings of our ancient ancestors, dating right back to the Neolthic chambered tombs, standing stones, Bronze Age Cairns and Iron Age Hillforts, most in spectacular locations. The high hill seen in this footage hosts a major Hillfort on it's summit know as Garn Fawr, which legend has it as the palace of a ruler of the local kingdom. Behind and out of site on another knoll is it's smaller companion, Garn Fechan. Both of these hillforts will be featured in a future presentation. Today we concentrate on the Coastal Promontory Fort know as 'Dinas Fawr' .This translates in English to the 'great city' although it's really hard to imagine this coastal fort housing any more than a couple of roundhouses as the space is so tight. This fort juts out into the Sea and has a narrow neck that is no more than 50 metres at its widest point. Here the defensive walls and ditches underline its former use in the Iron Age as a defended settlement. The are of the fort is dominated by a large rocky knoll and as marked on the OS map , there is a footpath that follows the contours around to the rear on a very narrow shelf. It must be truly hair raising to walk this although there is plenty to show that people do. This path must have been pretty much the same during the Iron Age. It is said that this fort may have been an enclosed space for ritual purposes, no one knows for sure. Perhaps the bulk of the original fort has crumbled into the Sea over the last couple thousand years. Perhaps Dinas Mawr was related to the nearby Garn Fawr and Fechan forts? Maybe it was a fortified docking point for boats or coracles maybe as a bolt point for the larger forts nearby? But at 58 metres there would have been a incredibly steep path down to the sea, not one for anyone who suffers heights. The local Bay shown here is known as 'Pwll-Deri' which translates to 'Deri Pool' and the cleft the footage zooms in on is an old metal mine, long closed down. The scree from the mine highlights the work obtaining the metals and a track is just visible as it joins from the clifftop. The rocky Islands have picturesque names, ie Ynys Y Ddinas, Ynys Melyn, Ynys Ddu, Carreg Ddu,. The little bay and cliffs leading to the north is known as Porth Maenmelyn and beyond that in the distance is the automated Strumble Head Lighthouse. This will also be featured in a future presentation. Pen Caer is one of the best locations in Wales to catch site of Dolphins and Whales, today we were out of luck but its also possible to see Seals basking in the sun as well as a myriad of Sea Birds. Strumble Head is also known as the location of the last attempted invasion of Britain and just round the headland from here is the cove where the French landed in the late 1700's. The local farmers and women disguised themselves as soldiers and marched along the cliff tops to buy time for the british military to arrive here. This devious plan worked and before long the French surrendered. There is WW2 stuff here also, lookout points on the cliffs and secret radar and microwave stations. Also one of the very earliest cables that connected North America with Britain for telegraph during the 1800's had its station here. There is also a modern air traffic beacon that monitors transatlantic air flights on a nearby prominence. Music: aptly named "Stumble Hedz" written by the author for Nostramus , another in my suite of Landscape Soundscapes collection.
