To protect the base, I added an EVA sheet pad before starting the hardscape. The entire structure was created using black lava rocks, carefully joined together with filter floss and superglue. To hide the white floss, I used black geotextile fibers from a geotextile fabric piece, giving the scape a natural dark look. For the water flow, I set up a wicking system using DOOA Terratape, placed a submersible pump at the back, and tested the waterfall—it worked beautifully! To improve the wicking system further, I added more terratape for consistent hydration across the moss patches. Once the structure was ready, I greened up the hardscape with star moss and sheet moss, and tucked in some Java moss near the waterfall for a lush look. I also added floating Spirodela polyrhiza (a small floating plant) and a few small driftwood pieces for detailing. The result is a simple yet elegant mini moss waterfall scape—a living piece of nature that combines lava rock textures, flowing water, and vibrant moss greenery. If you enjoy terrariums, aquascaping, paludariums and DIY nature builds, this project will surely inspire your next creation. 🌱💧 Timestamps: 0:00 - The shallow tray 0:14 - Protection mat for the tray 0:34 - Creating the hardscape 3:54 - Testing the waterfall feature 4:06 - Laying down the terratape 4:30 - Mossing up the hardscape 5:28 - filling water and turning on the waterfall 5:57 - Adding floating plants 6:04 - Adding driftwood details Material buying links (may earn commission): Lava rocks - https://amzn.in/d/1pxAxQe Pump - https://amzn.in/d/2csXLng Geotextile fabric - https://amzn.in/d/b2hd1uR Commissioned piece for a display and hence there will not be any future updates for this build. This will however be high maintenance as you would need to top up the water everyday (maybe twice a day) due to extreme shallow tray and to prevent the pump from drying out. This will also need an automated misting mechanism as backup to keep the moss hydrated inspite of the wicking system if the RH in the region is low. Keeping the setup enclosed will help. I have other somewhat similar setups (with terratape) on the channel and you can find the updates on those builds in this playlist • Updates —————————————————————————————————————— I have always been fascinated by nature, especially the way life thrives in the smallest spaces.
