📢𝐓𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧: How To Know When It's Serious and The Best Approach To Surgical Treatment in Malaysia As a parent, there is nothing more distressing than seeing your child in pain and not being able to understand what's causing it. Tummy pain in children is quite common, but when does it signal a more serious problem? When should you seek the help of a paediatric surgeon? Tummy pain can stem from various causes, including simple viral flu or constipation, which often resolve with over-the-counter medications and dietary changes. However, some more severe conditions might necessitate surgical intervention. In my latest video, I explain this topic and outline potential surgical conditions, how to identify them, and the best approach to their treatment. 🔎 Identifying Common Causes of Tummy Pain 1️⃣ Viral Infections and Constipation: In many cases, your child's tummy pain might be due to a viral infection or constipation. Usually, simple paracetamol and maintaining good hydration can alleviate these symptoms. Introducing more fibre and fluid into their diet can also help regulate their bowel movements. 2️⃣ More Serious Conditions: More severe conditions like appendicitis, intestinal blockage, kidney stones, kidney obstruction, and urinary tract infections need to be treated differently and typically in a hospital setting. If your child isn't feeding well, not drinking enough, and has persistent pain despite simple analgesia, it's crucial to visit your GP, who can then assess and refer your child to a paediatric surgeon if necessary. 🏥 Surgical Conditions and Preferred Surgical Method 1️⃣ Appendicitis: Appendicitis can affect children of any age group. If I suspect appendicitis in a patient, I'll typically request blood tests and an ultrasound scan. 2️⃣ Intussusception and Mesenteric Adenitis: These are specific conditions in children that may cause significant tummy pain. They may require hospitalization and observation to differentiate them from appendicitis. 3️⃣ Other Abdominal Conditions: Abnormalities of the bile tract, kidney, or intestine, such as Meckel's Diverticulum, can also cause pain. Moreover, pain in the testes can sometimes cause referred pain to the tummy, so a thorough examination is essential. If surgery is required, for example in the case of appendicitis, the preferred method is laparoscopic surgery. This minimally invasive approach involves tiny incisions in the tummy, leading to less pain, faster recovery, and earlier discharge from the hospital. As a paediatric surgeon, I employ the laparoscopic method for most surgical procedures in the abdomen.
