Another historic building to be demolished on the Garrison, The old Civil Service Club The property was held under a full repairing & insuring lease for a term of 99 years from 1 August 1936, however the building is due to be knocked down after years of unoccupied. Catterick Garrison was home to more than 40,000 military service personnel during World War II, when it was known as Catterick Camp. the Club was opened 16th Feb 1937 by Maj Gen G.W. Howard. During WW2 the upper floor of the building was pressed into service as HQ building for the local Home Guard. A little known Catterick Fact, the commander of the Home Guard in the Catterick area, was Major Peter Hart one of the bank managers located on Richmond. In 1963 there were 3083 War Department civil servants eligible to apply for club membership, the following year they became MOD CS. All employed at the camp, included police, fire, tech grades working in REME workshops, and clerical grades employed across all units. Description The property was formerly occupied by the Civil Service Club and comprises: • Two function rooms & bar (main & side entrances and men’s toilets) • Ballroom and bar (with separate entrance and ladies’ & men’s toilets) • Kitchen and beer ‘cellar’ • 2-bedroom manager’s flat • First floor rooms and ladies’ toilet Location The property is prominently situated on a busy roundabout at the junction of Hipswell Road and Richmond Road; hence, it is a highly visible “point of arrival” when approaching Catterick Garrison from Richmond.
